DEVELOPMENTS: Brain Injury Care Facilities
Within the brain injury survivor groups there has been a call to action for consistent application of definitions across all medical, legal and other venues. Currently, the following two classifications are being used: Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
ABI is defined as an injury to the brain that has occurred after birth, but not related to congenital defect or degenerative disease. Cause of ABI include (but are not limited to) hypoxia, illness, infection, stroke, substance abuse, toxic exposure, trauma and tumor. TBI is defined as a traumatically induced structural injury and/or physiological disruption of brain function as a result of an external force.
According to one study, about 40% of those hospitalized with an ABI or TBI had at least one unmet need for services one year after their injury. The most frequent unmet needs were:
- Improving memory and problem solving;
- Managing stress and emotional upsets;
- Controlling one’s temper; and
- Improving one’s job skills.
Marathon is recognizing the ever growing need for care of individuals with Brain Injuries and is currently developing innovative facilities to serve this population.
